The short version: your files stay on your Mac. Nothing is uploaded to Sprocket and nothing about your library is stored on our servers. There is no Sprocket account, no analytics and no tracking. If you use Sprocket Pro, anything that leaves your home is end to end encrypted between your own devices.
What Sprocket is
Sprocket is a Mac app that organizes and plays the video files you keep on your own disk, and a companion app for iPhone and iPad that streams that library from your Mac. Sprocket Pro is an optional subscription that lets the companion reach your Mac when you are away from home.
What we do not collect
- No account. There is no Sprocket account, no sign up and no sign in.
- No analytics. The apps contain no analytics and no advertising code.
- No tracking. We do not track what you watch, what is in your library, or how you use the apps.
- No uploads. Your videos are never uploaded to us or stored by us.
Where your data lives
- Your videos stay where they are, on your Mac's disk. Sprocket does not copy or upload them.
- Your library details, such as tags, people, collections, favorites, ratings and resume points, are stored on your Mac.
- On iPhone and iPad, the companion keeps what it needs on the device to show your library, plus any videos you choose to download for offline viewing. Deleting the app removes them.
Streaming at home
You pair an iPhone or iPad with your Mac once, by scanning a QR code that the Mac app shows. On your home network the companion then connects to your Mac directly. No account and no internet service is involved, and nothing passes through us.
Sprocket Pro: streaming away from home
Sprocket Pro lets the companion reach your Mac over cellular and other Wi-Fi networks. To do that we run two things: a meeting-point service that helps your devices find each other, and a relay for the cases where they cannot connect directly.
Whenever the networks allow it, your devices connect directly to each other and your video does not pass through us at all. When a direct connection is impossible, the video passes through the relay as encrypted data. In both cases the video is end to end encrypted between your own devices. The keys stay on your devices, so neither the meeting-point service nor the relay can read what is sent.
What the service sees
- Connection metadata, such as the IP addresses of your devices and a random identifier for your Mac
- Encrypted setup messages that your devices exchange to connect, which it cannot read
- Relayed encrypted bytes and their volume, so the monthly relay allowance can be counted
- The App Store's signed purchase record, to check that a subscription is active
What it never sees
- Your video
- Titles
- Thumbnails
- Your library, or anything in it
- Your encryption keys
We use this information only to run the service: to connect your devices, to count the relay allowance, and to confirm a subscription. Nothing about your library is stored. Relayed video is forwarded, not kept. We do not sell this information or use it for advertising.
Purchases
Sprocket Pro is bought in the app through the App Store. Apple handles the payment and any refund. We do not receive your name, your email address or your payment details from Apple. The service checks the App Store's signed purchase record to confirm that a subscription is active.
Update checks
Apps installed from the App Store are updated by Apple. A copy of the Mac app that was not installed from the App Store checks for new versions using the Sparkle update framework. That check is a standard web request for a small file on our static website (appcast.xml). It carries no identifiers and no personal data beyond what any web request includes, such as your IP address, and we run no analytics on it.
This website
This website is a set of static pages. It sets no cookies, runs no analytics and loads nothing from third parties.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted at this address with a new date at the top.
